Biogen Idec (NASDAQ: BIIB) and Elan Corporation, plc (NYSE: ELN) announced today the publication of results demonstrating that patients treated with TYSABRI® (natalizumab) showed a significant improvement in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) measures when compared to placebo. These results are from the first Phase III multiple sclerosis (MS) studies that have demonstrated improvement on HRQoL measures in patients with relapsing forms of MS.

Biogen Idec (NASDAQ: BIIB) and Elan Corporation, plc (NYSE: ELN) welcome final guidance announced by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommending use of TYSABRI (natalizumab) in people with highly active relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). TYSABRI is the first treatment for multiple sclerosis to be recommended for use by NICE.

An early-phase study of BHT-3009 (Bayhill Therapeutics), both alone and in combination with Lipitor® (atorvastatin, Pfizer, Inc.) found the drug to be safe and to induce a beneficial immune response in relapsing-remitting+ or secondary-progressive MS**. BHT-3009 is a vaccine containing genetic material that instructs cells to produce myelin basic protein (MBP), a component of myelin, an immune target in MS.

In their search for the cellular and molecular causes of multiple sclerosis, an Italian-German research team has identified a subgroup of protective immune cells (suppressor cells) which are strikingly reduced in number in patients with this nervous system disorder. These suppressor cells are characterized by a specific surface marker, called CD39, and degrade ATP, an energy carrier released from damaged tissues.
