In a study of the maternity records of more than 6,000 women, David J.P. Barker, M.D., Ph.D., and Kent Thornburg, Ph.D., of Oregon Health & Science University discovered a strong correlation between the size and shape of a woman’s hips and her daughter’s risk of breast cancer. Wide, round hips, the researchers postulated, represent markers of high sex hormone concentrations in the mother, which increase her daughter’s vulnerability to breast cancer.

A new study finds that white women more frequently take more of the life-prolonging supplemental therapies used to treat breast cancer than African-American women.African-Americans whose cancer had spread to the lymph nodes were less likely to have adjuvant cancer therapy than white women, the study showed. Adjuvant therapy is treatment given to kill remaining cancer cells, in addition to the primary therapy.

Women diagnosed with HER-2 positive Stage III or Stage IV breast cancer are eligible to participate in a clinical trial investigating early detection of brain metastases from advanced breast cancer through education and screening. New Zealanders have only one more week to register for the first national conference for those affected by breast cancer. Final preparations are now underway for the conference, hosted by the Breast Cancer Network (NZ) in Rotorua in October starting on the 26th of this month. The three day talk-fest will open with internationally acclaimed breast surgeon, breast cancer researcher and women’s health advocate, Dr Susan Love, as its keynote speaker.

Researchers in a multicenter international study have identified a new gene that, if mutated, may increase a woman’s risk of breast cancer by more than a third.Further, the researchers found that the gene, HMMR, interacts with the well-known breast cancer gene BRCA1. Alternations in either gene cause genetic instability and interfere with cell division, which could be a path to breast cancer developing.
